This page teaches the fundamentals you’ll use constantly in Silksong. It avoids spoilers and focuses on habits that make the early climb more forgiving.

Core movement

  • Respect momentum. Hornet is faster and more aerial; buffer dash/jump inputs to stay mobile.
  • Use needle reach. Forward slashes extend slightly; downslashes bounce you off hazards and enemies.
  • Vertical control. Practice wall-jumps and air-control to thread tight platforming without panic.

Early traversal upgrades dramatically expand your options. Drifter’s Cloak (found in Far Fields) allows Hornet to ride wind currents; Clawline (a needle grappling hook) is obtained in Underworks East and lets you launch toward walls and enemies. Master these moves as soon as you acquire them.

Silk and Bind (healing)

  • Silk replaces SOUL. Attack to gain Silk; spend it on heals or powerful skills.
  • Bind is fast but commits you briefly. Heal in the air or after baiting a whiff from enemies.
  • Don’t hoard Silk. Spending to survive is better than saving for perfect damage windows.

Collect Spool Fragments to increase your Silk bar early. These can be purchased from Grindle or found in secret rooms.

Benches and routing

  • Benches restore, manage loadout, and set respawn. Unlock shortcuts before hard pushes.
  • Expect multi-room loops. If a route spikes in difficulty, scout laterally for tools or crests.

Some benches in later areas are single‑use (notably in Underworks West), so plan a safe route back to the previous bench before progressing. Always unlock Bellways when you find them—defeating the Bell Beast makes these fast‑travel stations available.

Tools, crests, and crafting (early mindset)

  • Tools are limited-use abilities that expand offense or utility. Keep a balanced kit (gap-closer + control).
  • Crests shape your build and available tool slots. Swap for the encounter, not just stats.
  • Materials matter. Break detours to grab rare crafting drops; they unlock key upgrades.

Aim to acquire at least one red, one blue and one yellow tool before facing tougher bosses. Early standouts include the Sting Shard (purchased from Forge‑Daughter), Druid’s Eye from the Mossberry quest and the Compass for navigation. Memory Lockets add additional slots to a crest—keep an eye out for these.

Combat habits

  • Learn one punish per enemy. Identify a safe response (jump, dash-through, parry window) and repeat it.
  • Space first, damage second. Preserve masks; small mistakes snowball quickly with harder hits.
  • Use the arena. Bait lunges into walls, create height, then counter with downslashes.

Many bosses have specific tells. Watch their patterns for safe Bind windows. Parrying or dash‑throughing attacks generates Silk and opens opportunities. Don’t forget your tools—Tacks can control ground swarms, while the Cogwork Fly provides sustained ranged pressure.

Money and losses

  • Rosaries are currency. Spend steadily on maps, tools, and core upgrades instead of hoarding.
  • Recover smart. On death, plan a clean route back; rushing often causes a double loss.

Purchase Rosary Strings to bind loose beads and prevent catastrophic loss. Farming spots like the Choral Chambers can replenish your funds quickly.

Early priorities checklist

  • Secure the local map and basic navigation tools.

  • Unlock your first extra tool slot via crest/crafting upgrades.

  • Practice mid-air Bind in safe windows (post-lunge, post-slam).

  • Learn at least two boss-safe punishes (e.g., dash-through into backslash).

  • Complete the Berry Picking quest for the Moss Druid to earn Druid’s Eye.

  • Defeat the Bell Beast to unlock fast travel via the Bellway.

  • Explore Far Fields to obtain Drifter’s Cloak and continue into Underworks East for the Clawline.
